Life as a Business Owner and a Mother
Being a business owner while raising a family is something that becomes part of your everyday life. It is not two separate roles. They are connected in everything you do.
I run businesses in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, mainly gas stations, grocery stores, and other local operations. At the same time, I am a mother of three children, two sons and one daughter.
Both roles require attention, patience, and responsibility. Some days feel very busy, and other days require more focus at home. Over time, I have learned how to manage both in a steady way.
Finding Balance in Daily Life
Balance does not mean everything is perfectly equal every day. Some days my business needs more attention. Other days my family needs more time.
What matters most is being present where I am needed. When I am at work, I focus on the business. When I am at home, I focus on my family.
There are always tasks waiting on both sides, but I have learned that you cannot do everything at the same time. You have to move step by step and stay organized.
Building Stability for My Children
One of the main reasons I worked hard to build my businesses was to create stability for my children.
I wanted to make sure they grow up in an environment where they feel secure and supported. Running a business is not easy, but it gives me the ability to provide that stability.
My children have always been my motivation. When things get difficult, I think about their future. That helps me stay focused and continue moving forward.
I also want them to see what hard work looks like. I want them to understand that success comes from consistency and responsibility, not shortcuts.
The Reality of Time Management
Time management is one of the most important parts of balancing family and business.
There are always things that need attention. A store issue, a staffing concern, a school responsibility, or something unexpected at home.
I have learned to plan my day carefully, but also stay flexible. Things do not always go as planned, so you have to adjust when needed.
Some days start very early and end very late. But I try to make sure that both my business and my family get the attention they need.
Support Systems Matter
No one can manage everything alone. Having support is very important.
In business, I rely on my team to help with daily operations. At home, I rely on family support to manage responsibilities when I am busy.
Trust is a big part of this. I need to trust my team at work and the people around me at home. That trust allows me to focus on what I need to do without worrying all the time.
Over time, I have learned that strong support systems make everything easier to manage.
Teaching Through Example
As a mother, I believe children learn more from what they see than what they are told.
My children see me working hard, managing responsibilities, and staying committed even when things are not easy. I hope this teaches them the value of persistence and discipline.
I also show them that it is important to care about others, stay respectful, and take responsibility for your actions.
These are the same values I learned when I was growing up, and I try to pass them on through example.
Challenges of Balancing Both Roles
There are challenges that come with balancing business and family life.
Sometimes work becomes very demanding and takes more time than expected. Other times, family needs come first and require immediate attention.
It is not always easy to switch between roles, especially when both are busy at the same time.
There are moments of stress and fatigue, but I remind myself that both parts of my life are important. One supports the other in different ways.
Finding Meaning in Both Roles
Even though it can be challenging, I find meaning in both my work and my family life.
My business gives me purpose and allows me to contribute to the community. My family gives me strength and motivation to keep going.
They are connected. The stability I build through my work supports my family. And the love and support from my family helps me stay strong in my work.
What Balance Looks Like for Me
Balance is not about perfection. It is about consistency.
It means showing up every day, doing your best, and adjusting when needed. It means understanding that some days will be harder than others, but continuing forward anyway.
For me, balance is about staying grounded. It is about knowing what matters most in each moment and focusing on that.
Over time, this approach has helped me manage both my business and my family life in a steady way.
